FAQ
We generally recommend scheduling your travel consultation at least 4–6 weeks before departure whenever possible. However, even if your trip is approaching sooner, it is often still beneficial to schedule an appointment, as some vaccines and medications can still provide protection or travel support on shorter timelines.
Yes. Same-day and same-week appointments may be available depending on scheduling availability and travel timelines. Please contact our clinic if you need assistance with urgent travel scheduling.
To help us provide the best recommendations and streamline your visit, please bring the following if available:
- Your vaccination records or immunization history
- A list of your current medications
- Your travel itinerary, including your destinations, travel dates, and any planned excursions or activities
If you are scheduling a deployment medical exam, pre-employment medical exam (PEME), visa medical exam, or other program-specific evaluation, please also bring any paperwork, instructions, or forms provided by your employer, organization, or program.
Vaccine recommendations are personalized based on your destination, itinerary, medical history, planned activities, and length of travel. During your consultation, our clinician will review your travel plans and provide recommendations tailored specifically for your trip. It is your decision which, if any, vaccinations you would like to receive.
Depending on your destination, itinerary, planned activities, and medical history, your clinician may recommend prescription medications to help prevent or manage common travel-related health concerns.
These may include:
- Malaria prevention medication for destinations where malaria is present.
- Antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea, when appropriate and medically indicated.
- Motion sickness medication for cruises, boating excursions, or other travel where motion sickness may be a concern.
- Altitude sickness prevention medication for travelers visiting high-elevation destinations.
Your clinician will discuss any recommended medications, including how and when to take them, potential side effects, and other travel health recommendations specific to your trip.
Please note that the Travel & Immunization Clinic of Portland does not prescribe anti-anxiety medications. If you feel you may need medication for anxiety related to flying or travel, we recommend discussing this with your primary care provider before your trip.
Yes. A consultation allows our clinicians to review your medical history, travel plans, vaccine history, and individual health considerations before making personalized vaccine and medication recommendations.
Yes. In most cases, vaccines can be administered during the same appointment as your consultation. Some vaccines may require additional doses or boosters depending on the vaccine schedule.
Travel consultations are currently $126.99 per person for the first two travelers and $63.00 for each additional traveler attending the same appointment. Vaccine administration fees and vaccine costs are separate. Click here for a full list of our vaccines.
Because many insurance plans do not fully cover travel vaccines, we do not bill insurance directly. However, patients receive an itemized receipt with insurance coding that may be submitted for reimbursement. We also accept HSA cards with a major credit card logo.
